Steve Sarver recalls,
When Tom Heintzelman was on staff he always told the story of “The Cremation of Sam McGee” at either the opening or the closing campfire. He really got into it and always recited it with much passion. Years later, many former campers and staff members still talk about this. In addition he had a fantastic singing voice and taught both campers and staff quite a few songs.
John Nicholds adds,
Tom would lead the campers in the “Titanic” song in rounds during meals. It was always the favorite (and loudest) song every week and my personal favorite. I even taught it to my kids.
Tim Gaston recalls,
When Ernie from Troop 6 completed the mile swim, no one was more proud of the young man than Tom. He was very emotional. If there was ever a question as to whether or not we were making a difference as camp staff members, it was answered that day.
